Choose paints that DON'T give back.

1

Painting is one of the best ways to refresh a room. Unfortunately, most paints aren’t good for us: They give off volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which can cause short- and long-term adverse health effects Look for paints that say “low VOC” or “zero VOC,” as well as paint strippers that are nontoxic and biodegradeable. Have any of you tried the greener paints and/or strippers? What brands worked, and what didn't, and where did you find them? Tell us about your experience using them!

As a Sustainable Interior Designer and Consultant I like to suggest for safety, non offensive smells, great coverage, and esthetics's, Green Planet Paints. Green Planet Paint is an interior clay paint. I have successfully used this product in staging projects and can use one coat in most cases.

Keep in mind that standard paint at of your local stores are a petroleum product... a can of chemicals. I prefer natural paints made of clay, lime, and milk. Another paint company to consider is Anna Sova's food grade paint. It has zero VOCs and 94% food ingredients.

When I need a complete line of paint products including exterior paint and more, I like to use AFM SafeCoat. The broad product line offers adhesives, sealants, stains, paints and many types of coatings that has been developed by a doctor twenty years ago for people with chemical sensitives and allergies, and it is easy on the planet too. For three years I have mixed the paints and sold their products to many eco-friendly customers.

My new favorite green product is Rubio MonoCoat for floors and furniture. This product is an oil wax that comes in 40 plus colors and has zero VOCs. This is a one coat oil for your floors and furniture and is very easy to maintain. Rubio MonoCoat's forty colors are a game changer for designers who want to use bamboo. Rubio's color options broaden the opportunity to use bamboo in projects, bamboo has been limited in colors options until now!

I got my paints down at Your Home Your World in Concord. Meredith was great in helping me. The paints really don't give off the smells that give me headaches. They don't cover as well but it beats all the smells.
