Biking is better

We all need to get around, and in much of New Hampshire, there aren’t as many public transportation options as you’d find in a big city.
But there are lots of ways to reduce your impact on the environment, however you get around.
For starters, try leaving the car behind: For most of us, the most environmentally friendly and healthy way to get around is by bike – especially during the warmer months, when even a ride to work can seem like a tour of New Hampshire’s charms. But getting on that seat can be a little intimidating for those of us who aren’t in the best shape, or who aren’t sure how to handle riding in traffic. For those people (Green Guide editors included), we have a solution: The Granite State Wheelmen, which touts itself as New England’s most active recreational bicycling club. Membership is $15 a year, and the group takes great pains to show newcomers the ropes. 898-5479.

And here’s a two-for-one deal: The Bike/Walk Alliance of NH, which calls itself “A Voice for New Hampshire’s Bicyclists and Pedestrians.” A yearly tax-deductible membership, which costs $35 or more, includes a membership in the Granite State Wheelmen, a 10 percent discount on bike parts and accessories at many bike shops in the state, access to the BWA-NH e-mail group and information about events and workshops. 898-9926.
