If you live or work in Concord, take advantage of PATH. The Program for Alternative Transportation and Health is a service offered by the Central New Hampshire Regional Planning Commission. The goal: to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicle trips in and around the Concord area by promoting alternatives to driving alone.
According to PATH, motorized transportation accounts for nearly 100,000 pounds a day of NOx emissions, or 51 percent of daily totals in Concord alone. Also, it says, there was a 38 percent increase in accidents and a 62 percent increase in fatalities related to traffic accidents in the city between 1995 and 2005.
To help combat this growing problem, Path offers:
• a ride-matching service to help you find somebody to carpool with.
• incentive programs with prizes for those who commute by means other than driving alone.
• an emergency ride home program for carpoolers and bikers – with that kind of reassurance, what’s holding you back??
• information about transit services and trails.
• an employer program to help employers develop plans to promote a healthy workplace, reduce parking demands and save employees’ money.
PATH membership is open to everyone who lives or works in Concord. PATH offers incentives for people who carpool, use public transit, bicycle or walk to work.
The Seacoast Metropolitan Planning Organization Regional Alternative Transportation Guide offers information on the many options available to those who don’t want to drive: www.rpc-nh.org/Transit/.
NH Rideshare is a free commuter-matching service provided by the NH Department of Transportation and dedicated to finding an alternative way for commuters to travel to and from work.
Use the program’s database to find other commuters who have similar schedules and routes, use the Rideshare Calculator to find out how much it really costs you to commute per month and per year, and view a list of park-and-rides in the state. 1-800-462-8707.
