I grew up in France in the 70’s where we’ve been hard hit by the skyrocketing fuel prices. I can still remember the ads airing daily on radio and TV during the first oil crisis. Almost 40 years later, the sticky slogan still stays in my mind: “we do not have oil but we have ideas”.
At school, every day before dismissal, our teacher allocated the last 5 minutes before dismissal to educating us on energy preservation and healthy lifestyle. That was the time when the town manager imposed a no idling zone near the primary school and the car park in front of the building was transformed into an awesome play ground with shade and fruit trees. A mom organized a daily “Walking Bus” roster and each parent volunteered once a month to guide the kids on their way from home to school. Great ideas indeed…and put right into actions!
It just takes a leader, a mentor, a manager, an elected official or a simple individual to define a vision, Break it into bite size chunks of objectives, establish an action plan and other people will adhere and participate. It is easy: one just has to decide that NOW is the time to do it!
