A rain garden is an eco-friendly landscaping feature designed to mitigate stormwater run-off, a leading source of water pollution that also contributes to local flooding. NH Coast plans to install demonstration rain gardens in Portsmouth and New Castle this year. The installations will be used to educate the public about the benefits of rain gardens and promote their use throughout the coastal watershed. The New Castle rain garden is being funded in part by an $8,000 grant from the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership, as authorized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Current sponsors of the Portsmouth rain garden include Appledore Engineering, Stonyfield Farm, Portsmouth Garden Club, and Cornerstone Tree Care. Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring one or both of these projects should contact David Anderson, Project Coordinator at (603) 617-0679 or send an email to info@nhcoast.org. You can also support this groundbreaking program by become a member of NH Coast today for as little as $25. Visit our website at www.nhcoast.org to learn more. |
